I saw an article on the kansas city kansan website that mentioned a new community garden organized by Mrs. Trout.

That sounds pretty cool. Does anybody know where it's located? I thought it might be fun to check out.

it's next to the community center...and you can park in the lot. i just wonder if the people have to carry their own water to the site like the lake forest people do. i am growing some tomatoes in containers now but want to grow them in the ground...wonder if they will balk at me digging in the rental yard. hummmm i have not asked the price of the plot rental as i expect there is one.

The garden is next to the Community Building....it is free...you will sign an agreement (not to plant illegal things/ not to use chemicals, to maintain your spot, or ask for help if you can't, etc...) there are several spots to pick from, all different sizes....I'm over there most nights and some days after work...I'm the sweaty one with the mower or shovel....there will be water barrels on site some time at the end of next week...someone is trying to get them....if they can't, then I will buy several cans next Friday....you can plant flowers, fruit, veggies....I have flowers, peppers, tomatoes, onions, turnips, okra....I'm working on a totem pole in one of the plots, and plan to put a small bench up soon....anything goes pretty much (tasteful)....if anyone knows any boy scouts, clubs, Master Gardener's...anyone that wants a space...this was meant to be strictly Edwardsville residents, but I don't see a problem with Bonner residents, we have plenty of space unspoken for...I thought it might be a neat place for the gradeschool kids to plan for a hike and or picnic next fall if we get enough things planted and placed....blewblink@yahoo.com...Lesli

sounds like Lake of the Forest...but better! you will not have to tote your own water...but boo hoo, we can not have a golf cart to go visit our site!
how do we keep deer, rabbits, insects and plot robbers from spoiling our toil...ssss

It is a great idea.......i just do not wish to go that far from home..(ha 3 blocks)

Lesli,

Sounds like a great place to plant some pumpkins too! I had very good results with mine last year, with one hill producing over 20 pumpkins. They're relatively easy to maintain as long as the spot drains well.

So you're putting up a totem pole? So are you a woodworker?

Hi Lesli,

Thanks for your hard work in organizing this. We're definitely considering expanding our gardening, so we'll give you a shout when I get the green light from the boss!

Invisible Outside Danger Arrives Early This Year

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Chigger season is off to an early start in our area.

Gerald Hoff, Ph.D, an Epidemiologist at the Kansas City Health Department, says chigger season typically begins in August but area veterinarians are already reporting an increase in dogs and other pets with chigger bites.
Hoff explains that chiggers are tiny insects you can only see with a microscope. Chiggers live in grass and bushes looking to feed on flesh whether it's human or animal.
"They (chiggers) penetrate the skin with their mouth parts," Hoff explained. "The itching is caused by an alergic reaction to the enzymes that the chiggers put into you."
While chigger bites are itchy and irritating, they do not expose victims to other diseases.
Dr. Hoff says good protection against chiggers includes applying insect repellent around your ankles before you go outside. He also recommends wearing long pants tucked into socks to minimize your chance of getting bitten by chiggers.
KSHB-TV41 reports that summer's favorite species - the chigger - is back in full force this year. According to the report, the chigger doesn't generally make its appearance until August.

One thing I was talking over with my neighbors is the lack of bagworms this year. Maybe it's too early yet, but driving around town I don't see any in the trees. Perhaps it's too early.

Must be a regional thing, TNT. We've got'em thick down here. And not just on the pecan trees, too.

Your gourds are beautiful, Nannymom. I saw a show last year or so and they showed you how to make those gourd birdhouses from picking the gourd to finished project. Maybe you can find a tape of it--it was a PBS show

Do you know the name of that heirloom tomato you've grown? You certainly have a "bountiful" harvest. Wish I had some of those cuces, yummy.

I don't care about the veggies but what would it take to talk you out of one of those birdhouse gourds ? Not sure I know how to make a birdhouse but I bet I can find out.
