PostSubject: Movie Reviews   Tue Jan 27, 2009 10:54 am

I was thinking it would be a good idea to create a thread where we could post our reviews of different things, sorta like a "try it before you buy it." Initially, I was going to lump everything together, but then I thought "movies" might be a lengthy enough category to warrant its own thread.

If TM thinks this would fit in a better place other than General, please feel free to relocate it. Also, my intention of this thread was for people to review new or relatively new movies either in theatre or in rental. I've been burned quite a few times going to a movie that the critics said was really good or vice versa. I thougt since we know each other pretty well, we might be able to better recommend movies. So, here's my first review:

Inkheart:
Lilmama and I saw this movie this past weekend. I gotta say overall we were both kinda disappointed. The story is about this man that discovers that when he reads aloud a character from the book comes to life. But, to balance this, a person from the real world is then sucked away into the book. He discovers this while reading a book one night to his daughter titled "Inkheart." His wife disappears into the book when several characters come out of the book.

The biggest problem I had with this movie is all the holes in the logic. Did you notice I said several characters came out of the book, but only the mother went in? Within 15 minutes, the movie was already conflicting it's own logic. So anyways, this book Inkheart is apparently extremely rare. The movie never explained what happened to the copy he had, but it takes him 9 years to find another copy. By this time his daughter is pre-teen-ish, and she grew up thinking her mother had abandoned her. She then learns the truth and learns that she too is a "silver-tongue," somebody who can read from books and bring characters to life.

So this bad dude from the book inkheart wants to capture a silver-tongue so that he can bring to life a really really bad monster from inkheart named the shadow. I'm not really sure why. I think it had something to do with world dominance or something. So the rest of the movie is about capturing the silver-tongues and them constantly escaping, getting re-captured, re-escaping. Oh yeah, and there's this old lady that serves no purpose to the plot. It was like they created a character for her but didn't know what to do with her.

The special effects are awesome, but I kept getting the impression that either the director or the editor did a terrible job. It could have been much better, but lilmama and I spent most of the drive home talking about how the movie didn't make sense. For example, the "bad guys" were armed to the teeth, yet there was never a single shot fired in the entire movie, even when there should have been shooting.

Overall: 2 out of 5 stars. Good special effects, terrible plot logic/directing/editing

Stepbrothers:
I usually don't care much for raunchy-type movies (40 year-old virgin, knocked up, etc.). I don't know if this movie falls in that category, but I was laughing my butt off through the whole movie, and I'm still laughing 2 days later! However, I wouldn't watch it in front of children. It seemed like every other word was the "F" word, and there was a lot of vulgar subjects.

The movie is about a woman and man getting married. They both happen to have loser sons that are 40 years old still living at home. They move into the dad's house and the sons have to share a room. What cracks me up about this movie is that it reminded me of a couple of neighbor kids I used to play with and how they fought all the time. It also reminded me of this guy that lilmama's sister is dating. He's a 40 year old loser still living at home too. Maybe that's why I found the movie so funny.

It's childish. It's raunchy. It's damn funny if you're in the right frame of mind.

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars. Rental.

I think this is a great idea TNT and I'll leave it right where it is. I probably won't comment too much but I will love reading the reviews.

Hidalgo
Based on the true story of Frank T. Hopkins
Great movie about a cowboy that was a long distance Horse Race rider, and his horse Hidalgo. He won over 400 races including one across the Arabian desert. All of the other horses were of the finest stock, but Hidalgo was a Pinto mustang.
Great adventure movie.

We just watched this movie with Brad Pitt called "Buttons".

It's the story of a child that is basically born as an old man, and as the years pass he gets younger and younger.

It's kinda quirky, like "Forrest Gump", but where Gump was funny, Buttons was sad. Well written and directed, it certainly held my interest. I'd classify it as drama, maybe with a Greek tragedy sort of feel to it.

Not my favorite movie, but I have to admit, I was still thinking about it long after it was over. Good flick that I would recommend.

I watched "Blood Diamonds" last night. Powerful stuff. I'd heard of the Conflict Diamonds before but after watching that movie the word Conflict is weak as milktoast. Excellent movie. Excellent also if you like shoot 'em ups. I'll never buy another diamond again. Stirring!

We just watched the new Star Trek and we loved it. Now I will have to admit I didn't think I would like it and was slightly prejudiced waiting to be disappointed but was pleasantly surprised. It was interesting, exciting and well written and the characters were cast to perfection in my opinion.

No he isn't but there is a visitor in it. It was really pretty cool.

My grandkids and I watched Enchanted. That movie is too cute and I love it. I bet I have watched it 10 times.

So we rented Eastwood's "Gran Torino" over the weekend. After hearing such rave reviews, we thought we'd give it a spin. I'm VERY glad we did. If nothing else, the movie proves that Clint's "still got it"!

I'd give the movie two thumbs up. Not the rough and tough of the "Dirty Harry" series, but you still see the heart of a lion in this flick.

We also got "Truce" with nobody I've ever heard of before. It was a pretty good movie as well, though poorly directed. Great story-line about a grandfather who is suddenly faced with raising a teen granddaughter. Happy ending.

I got "Canadian Bacon" with John Candy for my youngest son, and the Nicolas Cage movie about being an arms dealer (forgot the title) for my oldest son who was here. I didn't watch either of them.

Anyway, I would have NO problem naming "Gran Torino" as the best of the four we rented. Hands down.
